PERMAFROST

 

Permafrost a silver Pentecost, chromatic daydream lost, the neighborhood embossed 

Day for night the evenings acolyte, the afterthought of light, stars turn away in spite 

I feel my age, sheets pulled away, clouds glower down their necks, it’s a quote unquote day 

Permafrost, broadcasting blood exhaust, bouquet frozen mid toss, memories made moss

Under bed, follow the fraying thread, echoing tangled head, synonym for misread 

Prayer lowered head, scared pill bug spine, gravity, bourbon and scotch pine

I hold my breath, trees do the same, trapped in a purgatory we’re ashamed to name 

I’ve finished counting, I’m done with words

My rib cage flutters, a home for hummingbirds 

The permafrost covers my skin, it fills my grin

There’s a looseness in my chest that’s like a rope with too much slack and then you hold my hand and suddenly we rhyme. The singing in your fingertips entrances me and spirals round my head like a swirling glass of wine. You’re the Polaris of my dreams, the siren song that drifts me out to sea, and I’m wonderfully wondering why Sometimes when you look at me the clouds all disappear and I am captured in the radiance surrounding. Then your smile just sweeps me to the dizzy atmosphere and I am swimming in the splendor so astounding.   How does it feel to be dealt a hand full of sardines and rusty nails?  Pinch yourself you might find that you hate the way you feel.  Frosted shoulder shoves your teeth into crooked interruption. Loop the handshake in reverse til we forget our introduction. Leaves falling like elevators, confetti the political desanguination. Your mouth is spitting bitter snow but everybody's changed the station. Scrape off the tears of rage and cultivate a garden of attrition. Feed the beast of kindness and pray it don't die of malnutrition. You think when the dust settles you'll ascend to the upper crust. But when all is dotted and crossed you'll only be left with dust. Elevator filled with fallen leaves, crisply blanket the fallow field. Throwing punches yards from the mark, it doesn't matter if you yield.
